What is the most unexpected place where you’ve encountered the Persianate?
We want to hear about it!
The Association for the Study of Persianate Societies (ASPS) and Ajam Media Collective invite submissions for our new article series: The Unexpected Persianate.
Have you ever noticed a family tradition, neighborhood landmark, a debate, a photograph, a song, or a casual turn of phrase that evokes the Persianate – somewhere no one would expect?
We encourage authors to explore overlooked anecdotes, buried memories, or research marginalia to illuminate unexplored avenues for (re)thinking the Persianate world. These can be objects, places, or ideas that speak to how the Persianate appears—unexpectedly— to bridge the past and the present.
Submissions may include images, sounds, and any relevant mixed media. This is your chance to be playful and speculative!

We envision the Unexpected Persianate as both an archive and a catalyst that can spark new research trajectories. Submissions should be 500-1000 words, and may take the form of a provocation, argument, photo essay, comic, or reflection.
Approved submissions will be published on ajammc.com, and authors will be compensated for their contributions.
Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. If you are submitting a piece in a language other than English, please submit an English translation of your piece as well. To submit your pieces, please follow this link and let us know in the first line that you are submitting for the “Unexpected Persianate” initiative.
